Stop Wasting Time with Being Busy, and Become More Focused and Productive

5/24/2019

Entrepreneurs spend a lot of time being busy while building their business, but more often they are not getting the results they want because they are not focused and productive in order to get things done.  The shiny object syndrome has been an on-going challenge that entrepreneurs face, so why is this? Let’s dig deep to find out why. When I was in the building stages of my business, I was all over the place and wasting a whole lot of time.  I was caught up in busy energy, and wasn’t getting anything accomplished. I was spending countless hours on tasks that weren’t bringing me the desired results, or income.

In fact, I wasn’t any closer to building a successful business.  Clearly, this way of doing things were not working for me.  I was wasting a lot of time on being busy, but not productive.  And this didn’t change for me until I made the mental shift in my mind, and start to implement certain practices.  I realized if I wanted to experience success in my business, I needed to change my mindset and gain a clear picture in my mind of what I wanted and why I wanted it.  So with that picture in mind, I set the intention for what I wanted to happen in my business and life, and decided to move forward from that point on.

So here’s the deal:

If this is an area that you also struggle with don’t worry because you can overcome the busy energy and shiny object syndrome too just as I did. Below are a couple of strategies that I implemented to support me in becoming more focused and productive in my business and life so I could get things done, and create the results that I wanted.

So this is what I did:

1.  I Examined My Commitment Level.

Once I realized that having a deeper level of commitment would be required, I questioned myself to determine If I was willing to do whatever necessary to reach the long term success in my business – meaning having an overflow of happy clients that I LOVE serving that are experiencing off the charts success in their business. Also, having the understanding that the commitment to my goal of building a successful business would sometimes require that I do things that I didn’t like to do or was not comfortable doing.  This is where the procrastination in most cases set in because tasks that I was scared to do clearly didn’t get done.  Often times your biggest paydays are connected to the area that you are most afraid.

2.  Procrastinating.

Fear often times stopped me from moving forward, and doing things that would take my business to another level. But once I stopped allowing fear to paralyze me from executing tasks and seizing opportunities, I started walking through un-chartered territories by faith and unleashed my confidence within, and found out that I was better than I thought I was at certain tasks.I started trusting myself more, and believing that I was a winner and this accelerated my success in business.

3.  Stopped Wasting Time on Menial Tasks.

I looked at the tasks that I was spending the bulk of my time on, but never getting completed, and noticed that they were not related to income generating tasks.  The menial tasks like checking emails, customer service, and accounts payable can be outsourced to a virtual assistant or an intern.

4.  Set My Priorities.

I had to determine what priorities needed to be addressed so I could stop overwhelming myself to do everything. Sometimes I held on to tasks mentally that needed to be done, and often worried about how I would get them done, but quickly learned that this was draining my energy.  So to stop this, I created a master to-do list which is a list of tasks that need to be done now.  Sometimes you can feel like everything needs to be done now, but it really doesn’t.  List your tasks on your master to-do list from important to least important.  Often times in business you’re playing multiple roles; therefore, you may have to execute other functions too which may take more of your time, but to alleviate this, you can obtain a Virtual Assistant to support you in executing tasks that you’re not familiar with.  Obtaining support also will free up your time so you can really focus on what you’re great at doing in your business and income generating activities too.

5.  Choose a Task from the Master To-Do List to Focus On.

Narrow your scope for the tasks that you will focus on, breakdown the task in bite size steps to help you get it done.  Identify and list out each step that you need to do.  Make sure you take action on each step to get the task completed.  And then rinse and repeat selecting tasks from your master to-do list until you have completed everything on your list.

Go and implement these strategies into your business and life.  My intention here is to let you know that you have everything you need to succeed in business.  But don't allow the busy energy, fear, frustration, and procrastination keep you from being focused and productive.  Let me know how these strategies have helped you to become more focused and productive in order to get things done.

With Your Success In Mind,

Cynthia Lewis
